PPLN & PPSLT Crystal Ovens

Applications:

  • Thermal stabilization of PPLN and PPSLT crystals
  • Quasi-phase-matched wavelength conversion
  • Frequency doubling and mixing systems
  • Laboratory and R&D laser platforms
  • Production and OEM photonics systems

PPLN and PPSLT crystal ovens are designed to keep nonlinear optical crystals at a stable, precisely controlled temperature—an essential requirement for accurate and repeatable wavelength conversion in laser systems.

Because crystals such as PPLN and PPSLT are highly sensitive to temperature, even small fluctuations can affect performance. These bench-top ovens gently and evenly heat the crystal, ensuring consistent output, improved efficiency, and long-term reliability.

The system includes two parts:

  1. A digital temperature controller, which precisely regulates heat

  2. A crystal oven, which evenly distributes heat around the crystal

Together, they provide stable operation from room temperature up to 200 °C, making them ideal for laboratory, development, and production environments.

Technical Overview

The DTR Series Digital Thermo Regulator is a bench-top thermal stabilization system designed for nonlinear optical crystals such as PPLN and PPSLT. The system provides precise temperature control from ambient conditions up to 200 °C, ensuring stable quasi-phase-matched operation in nonlinear wavelength conversion applications.

The system consists of a microprocessor-based thermo controller module and a dedicated crystal oven. Operating in PID control mode, the controller regulates crystal temperature via a semiconductor switch output and an RTD temperature probe input. An embedded current-loop receiver combined with a 16-bit pulse-width modulator (PWM) delivers long-term temperature stability better than 0.05 °C RMS.

The crystal oven incorporates a nonlinear crystal holder, a temperature-to-current converter, and a coaxial heater designed to provide highly uniform thermal distribution. The oven housing is constructed from thermally insulating materials to minimize external temperature influence and improve stability.

Standard oven geometry accommodates nonlinear crystals with a 5 × 5 mm cross-section and variable crystal lengths. Larger crystal formats are available upon request.
